After starting the season 0-3, “a win is a win” as its been said for Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers, whether it be a controversial one or not, as they hung on to defeat the powerhouse known as Tom Brady and the New England Patriots 24-20 at home Monday Night.
With the ball on the Carolina 18 yard line with 3 seconds to go in the 4th, Brady aired a pass into the end zone originally targeted for Patriots tight end, Rob Gronkowski, before it fell short and into the hands of Panthers rookie safety, Robert Lester, for the game ending interception… or so they thought.
Flags were thrown, the play was reviewed, a hold/ defensive pass interference on Gronk was detected, but ultimately stood as a no call due to Brady’s pass being underthrown. Patriot coaches and players left furious with no explanation, the refs cleared the field and the game was over.
“I don’t make the calls or the rules,” Brady said. “I wish it wouldn’t have come down to that. I think there were plenty of plays we could’ve made. But it did, and they’re going to make the call or they’re not going to make the call. But we can play better than that.”
Former Auburn superstar quarterback, Newton, continued his excellence making his presence known setting up and completing plays both in the air and on the ground. Going 19 for 28, throwing for 209 yards equaling to 3 TDs and no INTs; Sir Newton also took his game on the run- rushing for 62 yards on 7 carries.
Despite the sour ending, Tom Brady went 29 for 40 on the night, throwing for 296 yards- ending the night having only being sacked once against one of the league’s most dominant defenses.
Both teams now sit pretty at 7-3 as Carolina heads to face the Dolphins in Miami for Week 12, while New England has no time to dwell on the past- heading home to face the rollin’ Denver Broncos.
