The story of the underdog- IT fits it well. Washington native turned University of Washington Husky standout to last pick of the 2011 NBA draft- only to stun the world; as his specialities lie in quieting his doubters and those who feel stating “he’s too short” and “can’t defend the elite” will do anything but fuel his fire. He is a man who has done nothing but overcome obstacles his entire life and if how he showed up for his teammates after the loss of his dear sister while braving through a substantial injury wasn’t enough to make you a believer, stay tuned- his legacy has only just begun.
New year, new team. After seven long months away from the game- Isaiah Thomas has returned- only now to step onto the hardwood in the wine and gold of the Eastern Conference Champion, Cleveland Cavaliers to make his long-awaited season debut.
Thomas, coming off a season ending hip injury, showed no signs of rust Tuesday night as he scored 17 points in just 19 minutes off the bench, helping to seal the W for he and his teammates in a high scoring 127-110 bout over the visiting Portland Trail Blazers. As he entered the game with a little over 4:30 to go in the first quarter, the fans of Quicken Loans Arena quickly rose to their feet- cheering and howling- showing their newest edition nothing but love and praise- making his welcome to “the Land” one he’d never forget.
Just a season ago, Isaiah was selected for his second straight All-Star team appearance, led his team to the Eastern Conference Finals, and although not a finalist- was in the circling talks to be named league MVP. Needless to say, Thomas arguably played his best season yet and thus was looking to the summer ahead- one in which he felt he had made his case for a max contract deal with his then beloved Boston Celtics. Danny Ainge and Co. had other plans- leading to acquiring Cavs point guard, Kyrie Irving, in a 5-player trade.
Now that IT is back and healthy, he is focused on taking things one game at a time, continuing to grow and build chemistry with his teammates for greater success, and finally putting last year’s trade talks and all the dramatics attached to rest.
The Celtics will host the Cavaliers in Boston at TD Garden tonight (1/3/18) for the first time this season with tip-off set for 5PM PST on ESPN. The point guard showdown between Isaiah Thomas and Kyrie Irving will have to wait, however, as the Cavs will rest him for the night.
